Transferring Students within the System
Transferring within the University System of Georgia will be easier
than ever due to the semester conversion. To aid in transferring, many developmental and
lower division courses (0000-2999) share common numbering, titles, and course descriptions
across the University System.
Any area of the core curriculum that a student has completed at a
sending System institution will be accepted by the receiving System institution as being
complete, though the receiving institution's required courses in that area may differ.
If a student transfers without having completed an area in the core
(say, Area C), the student will then be subject to the stipulations of the receiving
institution's Area C. Thus courses taken in Area C at the sending institution may end up
being counted as general elective courses at the receiving institution, unless the
receiving institution happens to have those same courses in Area C.
If a student has completed the entire core, including Area F (major
field related courses), all 60 hours will transfer to the receiving institution. In
addition, System transfer students must be able to complete the baccalaureate degree
within the same total number of hours as native students.
If a student transfers Areas A-F but has not completed the necessary
prerequisites for courses in the major, the student must register for courses prerequisite
to those in the major but which were not part of the sixty semester hours provided by the
sending institution. These prerequisite courses will be counted as general or program
electives, rather than in Areas A-F. As a result, transfer students in many majors
(especially in science, mathematics and technology) will complete their baccalaureate
degrees with a greater proportion of lower division credits than will native majors
(students who have not transferred from another institution).
