Baccalaureate Degrees
- A baccalaureate degree must contain a minimum of 120 semester hours.
- A baccalaureate degree program has a maximum of 120 semester hours
(exclusive of physical education activity/basic health or orientation course hours that
the institution may require) unless a waiver of this maximum has been approved.
- A baccalaureate degree program must require at least 21 semester hours
of upper division courses in the major field and at least 39 semester hours of upper
division work overall.
Master's Degrees
- Master's degrees should contain a maximum of 36 semester credit hours.
However, national patterns should be followed within various disciplines.
- For any degrees requiring beyond 36 but not more than 40 semester credit
hours, institutions should provide modest justification for a waiver of the maximum 36
hours.
- For any degrees beyond 40 hours, institutions should provide clear and
convincing rationales for a waiver of the maximum 36 hours.
