Q What are the advantages of a semester system?
A The main academic advantage is that the pace of a semester course is
less hectic. Students will have more time to absorb course material and work on projects.
More time and energy can be put into teaching and learning since there will be less time
taken by starting and stopping two semesters than three quarters.
There should also be a greater similarity with calendars at other
colleges and universities across the country, making it easier for students to transfer.
About 70% of colleges and universities in the country use the semester system, and more
are converting every year. All state-supported universities and colleges in Georgia are
converting to semesters.
Q What is the difference between a quarter system and a semester system?
A A quarter system divides the school year into three 10-week periods,
plus a 9-week summer session. A semester system divides the year into fall and spring
semesters, each 15 weeks, plus a 7-week summer session. Click to see the Calendars for 1998-1999.
