Frequently Asked Questions

What are the guidelines regarding release of my academic record?

In compliance with The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), as amended, Columbus State University has established policies and procedures to assure students of their rights under the Act. FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. CSU’s policies and procedures may be viewed in the CSU 2009-2010 Student Handbook by accessing the Student Life and Services website at http://studentlife.colstate.edu/2009-2010StudentHandbook.pdf  Detailed information regarding FERPA can be found at the US Department of Education website at http://www.ed.gov/offices/OM/fpco/index.html

How do I request a CSU transcript?

A request for a transcript may be submitted via (ISIS) by logging into CougarNet at http://cougarnet.colstate.edu A request may also be submitted in writing, either by mail or fax. Include your name, address, social security number and/or CSU student ID number, address of recipient and your signature (for transcripts requested via ISIS, the validation of your password is your signature). A transcript request form is available on the web at http://registrar.colstate.edu/transcripts.htm

I can’t log in or access ISIS.

It is recommended that you access ISIS via CougarNet at http://cougarnet.colstate.edu If there is still a problem, click the HELP button for more information.

What is my ISIS user ID and Password and who do I contact if I forgot my Password?

IF YOU HAVE NEVER LOGGED INTO ISIS BEFORE (or never visited ISIS from CougarNet) your password should be your birth date in the format DDMMYY.  For instance, if your birthday is October 23, 1986, your initial password is set to 231086 when your account was created.  If your birth date in this format does not work and you have never logged into ISIS and set a security question, this procedure will not work for you.  You will need to contact the Help Desk in the CCT building (706) 569-3044. For more information, go to http://www.colstate.edu/csuid/faq.htm

IF YOU HAVE LOGGED INTO ISIS BEFORE (or have visited ISIS through CougarNet) and have forgotten your password, this procedure will allow you to change your CougarNet/ISIS password provided you can answer your security question correctly.  Enter your CSU ID number in the box and click the submit button to display your security question.  If you provide the correct answer to the question, you will be allowed into ISIS but will be required to change your password.

How do I transfer credits from another institution to CSU?

Credits are transferred by submitting official transcripts from all institutions you have previously attended. Official transcripts must be submitted to the Office of Admissions.  The transcripts will be processed and a determination will be made as to which credits will be transferred and whether you are accepted to the institution.

Can I receive credit for military service, work related, College Level Examination program (CLEP), and Advance Placement?

You may be able to receive credit for military service.  Submit a readable copy of your DD214/295 or AARTS transcript to the Admissions Office or the Registrar’s Office. You must speak with the Dean of the College of your major for determination of credit.  For a listing of AP and CLEP tests and the scores required for credit, go to http://registrar.colstate.edu/transfer_info.htm .

Do courses taken at CSU transfer to other institutions?

It is up to each individual institution as to which courses it will accept for credit from another institution. Therefore, contact that institution to determine its transfer policies and which courses will be accepted for credit.

How do I compute my GPA?

(1)    Multiply the number of grade points earned
(A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1; F=0; WF=0) by the number of GPA credit hours for the course.

(2)    Add all GPA credit hours together.

(3)    Add all grade points together.

(4)    Divide the total grade points by the total number of GPA credit hours.

What do I do if I feel there is an error in my GPA?

Contact the Registrar’s Office at (706) 507-8800

My hours/GPA seem to be incorrect because of the quarter to semester conversion.

A student's GPA will not change because of the conversion to semesters. Hours attempted and hours earned will be multiplied by two-thirds to semester credits. For more information concerning semester conversion, click on Semester Conversion Main Menu

How is my academic standing determined?

The progress of all students is evaluated at the end of each semester. Determination of academic standing is based on a student’s overall and semester grade point averages and the number of course attempts in required learning support subject areas. GPA hours and grade points earned at other institutions are used in computing grade point averages as they affect academic standing.

I feel a grade I received is unfair. Can I appeal?

A student may appeal a grade received as well as certain degree requirements. A student who wishes to exercise this right should follow the appropriate procedure as follows:

1. To appeal a grade the student feels is unfair or inaccurate, follow the academic grievance process listed under the Student Rights and Responsibilities section of the Student Handbook at http://sa.colstate.edu/Handbook/handbook2003.pdf

2. To appeal a requirement in Areas A-F of the core curriculum or a general university requirement, the student should meet with his advisor to discuss the nature of the appeal.  If there is merit to the appeal, the advisor will assist the student in completing an Exception Petition form to be submitted to the university’s Academic Standards Committee for review. If approved by the Committee, the petition will be forwarded to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for a final decision.
